honolulu weekly reports on david horowitz's visit to the university of hawaii last wednesday:

last wednesday night, in and around the art building auditorium on the university of hawaii-manoa campus, nothing happened. this may come as a surprise to those who remember that david horowitz, the 1960s new left mandarin-turned-1980s new right mandarin, was scheduled to speak. horowitz spoke all right. it's just that, well, nothing happened. the size of the crowd, the number of protestors, the energy level—all of it paled in comparison to ward churchill's visit in february. horowitz—an editor, fox news commentator and, most important, a fundraiser—helped create the media circus that followed churchill to hawaii. he just couldn't duplicate it for himself.

horowitz and moderator andrew walden (the eidtor of the ultraconservative hawaii free press) had an ingenious two-pronged plan to win the hearts and minds of u.h. students: first patronize them, then insult them.

walden opened the event by speaking to the audience as if they were incontinent 4-year-olds: "we're going to act like adults here, right?" asked walden, noting that he didn't see anyone in the audience wearing diapers.

after this inspiring start, horowitz took the stage, brusquely refusing to have a lei placed over his shoulders. he then proceeded to insult everyone—friend or foe—in the room.

"to be welcome at this university" he told the audience, "you have to be an academic fraud who hates this country." responding to audience hostility (mild at this point, soon to get worse), he pontificated "nobody would do this if i was black or asian or trans-gendered." the event soared to further inspirational heights when horowitz repeated several times that u.s. students are receiving an inferior education.

horowitz was in town to sell his academic freedom bill—a policy initiative meant to procure professorships for conservative ideologues—and sell he did. along the way he enlisted his usual argument, that the american left is composed of feral, incoherent lunatics. (sadly, a minority of the protestors seemed determined to prove him right.) but in the end, the thin crowd (of 100 to 150) and the near-total absence of media coverage rendered the whole spectacle irrelevant.

another month has passed; tomorrow i remind my boss that i am leaving the job on tuesday (and that he needs to cut me my last paycheck)—i have no doubt on my mind that he has forgotten.

this is my night job—the job which i've been trying for the last three months to quit—which i work for two hours after my regular nine-to-five (or, more precisely, 7:45-4:30) job.

hopefully, this time, he won't put up too much of a fuss and will allow me leave.

if insists on using guilt tactics once again, i'm fully willing to walk out of the job. i will have no choice but to resort to that. i tried—and i want—to leave on good terms, considering that i've been an employee for a good three years, but i've compromised enough times already. i want out, and no amount of pay raises and ass-kissing will change my mind.

with or without his approval, i am leaving on tuesday—i refuse to work another day in that shithole.

conservative activist david horowitz to speak at the university of hawaii (u.h.-manoa art auditorium, 4/20, 7 p.m.):

in an eye-for-an-eye move, the college republicans at the university of hawaii, also known as the conservative coalition, have invited marxist-turned-right-wing activist david horowitz, to speak today at the u.h.

jame schaedel, the coalition's chairman, acknowledges that the invitation was a reaction to the february visit from controversial, liberal professor ward churchill.

says schaedel: "we wanted to see if we could get a conservative speaker of horowitz's stature, to prove a point that there is academic freedom. allowing him to speak on campus shows that there really isn't that big of a bias, speakerswise. the problem then goes back to the people who should benefit the most from this university, which is the students. there's bias against students in the classroom."

schaedel says he hopes horowitz's visit will bring to light "moral arguments like 'kill all white people,' like u.h. professor haunani-kay trask would say. there are a lot of liberal professors on campus, and i'm not saying that's bad, but how many conservatives do you have in the poli-sci department at u.h.? you have one."

when we have nothing left to give
there will be no reason for us to live
but when we have nothing left to lose
you will have nothing left to use

we owe you nothing
you have no control
we owe you nothing
you have no control

merchandise keeps us in line
common sense says it's by design
what could a businessman ever want more
than to have us sucking in his store?

we owe you nothing
you have no control
we owe you nothing
you have no control

you are not what you own
you are not what you own
you are not what you own
you are not what you own

we owe you nothing
you have no control
we owe you nothing
you have no control
