the sex pistols are to finally be inducted into the 2006 rock and roll hall of fame after being nominated for the fifth year in a row!

from eonline:

though they lasted only two years, the british rabble-rousers recorded the indelible punk anthems "anarchy in the u.k." and "god save the queen" on their lone album, never mind the bollocks, here's the sex pistols, and set the standard for self-destructive rock 'n' roll behavior thanks to frontman johnny rotten and the late sid vicious. other band members included paul cook, steve jones, and glen matlock.

"concerning nonviolence, it is criminal to teach a man not to defend himself when he is the constant victim of brutal attacks."

- malcolm x

"violent demonstration is korean culture," according to a forum topic from www.japantoday.com. i ran into it when i noticed that someone was hotlinking some of the gwangju uprising photographs from my webserver. i was shocked to find that the person was using those photographs to support their racist comments. i really don't appreciate that.

don't get me wrong, a lot of the posts on korean message boards are just as bad, or, perhaps, worse towards the japanese, but speaking ill of the protesters involved in the gwangju uprising—including some 3,000 who lost their lives while FIGHTING FOR DEMOCRACY—is in bad taste and uncalled for.

"thoughts from within" by woody harrelson:

i sometimes feel like an alien creature
for which there is no earthly explanation

sure i have human form
walking erect and opposing digits
but my mind is upside down

i feel like a run-on sentence
in a punctuation-crazy world
and i see the world around me
like a mad collective dream

an endless stream of people
move like ants from the freeway
cell phones, pcs, and digital displays

"in money we trust"
we'll find happiness
the prevailing attitude

like a genetically modified irradiated big mac
is somehow symbolic of "food"

morality is legislated
prisons over-populated
religion is incorporated
the profit-motive has permeated all activity

we pay our government to let us park on the street

and war is the biggest money-maker of all
we all know missile envy only comes from being small

politicians and prostitutes
are comfortable together
i wonder if they talk about
the strange change in the weather?

this government was founded
by, of, and for the people
but everybody feels it
like a giant open sore
they don't represent us anymore

and blaming the president for the country's woes
is like yelling at a puppet
for the way it sings
who's the man behind the curtain
pulling the strings?

a billion people sitting watching their tv
in the room that they call "living"
but as for me
i see living as loving
and since there is no loving room
i sit on the grass under a tree
dreaming of the way things used to be

pre-industrial revolution

which of course was before
the rivers and oceans, and skies were polluted
before parkinson's, and mad cows
and all the convoluted cacophony of bad ideas
like skyscrapers, and tree paper, and earth rapers
like monsanto and dupont had their way
as they continue to today

this was pre-us

back when the buffalo roamed
and the indian's home was the forest
and god was nature
and heaven was here and now

can you imagine
clean water, food, and air?
living in community
with animals and people who care?

do you dare to feel responsible
for every dollar you lay down?
are you going to make the rich man richer
or are you going to stand your ground?

you say you want a revolution
a communal evolution
to be a part of the solution

maybe i'll be seeing you around

"crime is naught but misdirected energy. so long as every institution of today, economic, political, social, and moral, conspires to misdirect human energy into wrong channels; so long as most people are out of place doing the things they hate to do, living a life they loathe to live, crime will be inevitable, and all the laws on the statutes can only in crease, but never do away with, crime."

- emma goldman

the people in the north american anarchist and leftist communities have all watched in the past several weeks with a certain amount of satisfaction as the french underclass has risen up in cathartic rebellion against the brutal forces of institutionalized racism, economic segregation, and state repression. as flames continue to encircle paris and destitute youth battle with police in the streets, we all wait expectantly to see whether these riots will fizzle out and end in a wave of repression, or whether they will lead to yet another glorious french revolution.

while it is unclear to north americans as to whether or not revolutionary conditions exist in france, it is fairly clear that there is some discontent with the french government, as was made apparent in may of this year, when a sizable majority of the french population voted against the neoliberal european union “constitution” despite a massive campaign in favor of its ratification, clearly showing dissatisfaction with top-down government, bureaucracy, and neoliberal capitalism. it is clear that the riots are an opportunity which must be acted upon, and if dissatisfied members of the native french working class and others can be galvanized against the government, the government could conceivably be brought down. if state-capitalism can be overthrown in france, the revolt might be a catalyst capable of sparking revolution elsewhere, redefining the entire world’s political paradigm as the first french revolution did. the stakes are extremely high.

how can this event be transformed from a riot to a revolution? it would seem clear that for this to occur, the rioters would have to develop a clear vision for a transformed, multiethnic, libertarian, and egalitarian france, and the revolt must begin to include not only immigrants and their children, but people of french ethnicity. how can this be done?

in my opinion, this is a perfect time for french anarchists and leftists to engage in a massive campaign of anti-capitalist, anti-state propaganda (for lack of a less authoritarian term), which could galvanize ethnic french people in favor of revolt, and could help the rioting immigrants develop a vision for a transformed france. french anarchists and leftists ought to hand out thousands of pamphlets on anti-authoritarian and anti-capitalist theory to rioters, destitute workers, and other people who have been excluded from prosperity. a shared vision of a transformed france could unite muslims, christians, and atheists; blacks, arabs, and those of ethnically french origin in favor or revolt.

there already exists in france a revolutionary momentum. whether or not it is harnessed to bring about libertarian and egalitarian revolution is up to you.

comrades, the time is right for organizing against the state and the capitalist system, and fighting in the streets!

"those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable."

- john f. kennedy

anti-u.s. demonstrations at the americas summit turned violent on friday as protesters set fire to a bank, looted stores and battled riot police blocks from a luxury hotel where u.s. president george w. bush met with regional leaders.

the violence came hours after tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets shouting "get out bush!" in a peaceful protest against the u.s. leader, who is unpopular among many latin americans who oppose the iraq war and his push for a regional free trade deal.

but as the leaders' summit opened, several hundred protesters shattered storefronts and fought pitched street battles with riot police, who responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets.

the two-day meeting of western Hemisphere leaders is expected to be a showdown over differing views on free trade between the american president and venezuelan leader hugo chavez.

chavez, a leftist and vocal critic of u.s.-backed free-market economic policies, vowed to work to defeat the stalled free trade area of the americas, or f.t.a.a.—a key bush administration plan to expand trade in the region.

"every one of us has brought a shovel, an undertaker's shovel, because here in mar del plata is the tomb of f.t.a.a.," chavez told a packed stadium, where protesters participated in an alternative people's summit organized by anti-free trade activists.

marchers urged the region's leaders to pursue alternatives to the u.s.-backed free-market recipes, which dominated in the region in the 1990s but failed to reduce poverty and inequality.

argentine president nestor kirchner echoed argentines' anger with the policies of the past as he opened the summit.

"we criticize the policies because we saw the results in argentina's crisis in 2001 and the fall of various democratic governments in the region," said kirchner, with bush and the other leaders looking on.

outside of the middle east, south america may be one of the most hostile places to u.s. policies, despite bush's vows upon taking office that it was a top foreign policy priority.

many in the region feel washington meddled too much in the past in economics and politics, then ignored the region to focus on the war on terrorism.

while the emerging markets of asia have roared ahead in the last 20 years, latin america's economies, rich with minerals, gas and farmland, fell into a cycle of boom and bust.

for many in the streets, free trade is not the way forward. "these deals are always tilted in favor of global powers," physical therapist ramon saracho said as he marched.

from the livejournal anarchist community:

anyone around the toledo area who sees this, we need your help.

fifteen carloads of nazis arrived on the fourth, and are staying at a tattoo parlor. upon driving by once, and back again a little more slowly, then turning in an alleyway, a nazi appeared in front of our car. we were not moving. he walked towards us, and i yelled, "back up!" to our driver. the second we moved, the nazi pulled out a revolver, aimed it right into the windshield. we all ducked, the driver sped back in reverse without looking, and we backed up as fast as possible down that street and flew the fuck out of there.

this concerns me for three reasons. first, they are armed, and bill white stated that they received two days of tactical training from a few ex-marines.

also, the police KNOW about this. an informant form the i.s.o. told us that the police had been out at the tattoo parlor where the nazis were staying, asking them to leave. obviously, they didn't, and obviously the police are not handling this situation.

lastly, they came unannounced. there is no resistance. they are armed, and they reacted VERY quickly to us when we simply drove by slowly. this tells me that they are paying a lot of attention, and taking this seriously. i am convinced that tomorrow will be a violent day. the nazis will have guns, and we don't know where they will be, at what time, or what they are doing.

we need all the help we can possibly get. because of the short notice, we are very desperate. i don't want to see any bloodshed tomorrow. i don't want to see the nazis attack any person in my city. please, if you have any information about this, or if you can come down, reply to this post.
