"i'm a molotov cocktail! you're dom perignon!"

- against me

after reading yesterday's article, i went and look up more info on greek anarchists. and what i discovered was slightly disturbing... no wonder so many people associate anarchism with violence. here are some video footages i came across:

greek anarchists firebomb cars at atherns police station:

suspected anarchists threw gasoline bombs at cars parked outside a central athens police station today, destroying 12 vehicles in the latest in a series of arson attacks, authorities said.

police said two patrol cars, four unmarked police cars and a police motorcycle were among the burned vehicles. there were no injuries or arrests.

the attack reportedly was carried out by a group of 30 to 40 masked youths in the capital's exarcheia district, a traditional stronghold for anarchists. the youths escaped on foot.

anarchists have stepped up arson attacks to show solidarity with inmate protests in greek penitentiaries that began after guards allegedly beat an anarchist bank robbery suspect.

police said order was restored in all prisons today when about 200 inmates at malandrinos prison in central greece—where the alleged beating took place—returned to their cells after four days of protests.

an editorial from the korea herald:

the student who shot dead more than 30 students and faculty members at virginia tech has been identified as a south korean with permanent residency in the united states. it is yet to be determined what led him to commit the worst gun massacre in u.s. school history.

the pain and anguish that families of the victims are now feeling is shared not only by members of the korean community in the united states, but also koreans here in korea. there have been expressions of shock from president roh moo-hyun and from ordinary people, who may or may not have children studying at american schools.

the korean government and people will have to do what they can, however small, to help those affected begin the healing process as soon as possible. in this regard, president roh took the right initial action when he twice sent "deep condolences" to the victims—the first came shortly after the tragedy was first reported, and then again when the criminal suspect was identified as a korean student. he said he was "shocked beyond description."

the slayings were a crime committed by a member of the korean community, one rotten apple. but the savage act was not sponsored by the korean community or the korean state. nonetheless, there is no denying that the shocking incident will taint the good image that the korean community and the korean nation have strived to build among americans.

it is most unfortunate that the massacre came at a time when korea has been improving bilateral relations with the united states, in particular by successfully concluding negotiations on a bilateral free trade agreement. the korean government should do what it can to minimize the fallout from this tragedy.

for example, it would be a good idea to send a delegation to virginia tech to express the condolences of the nation. it will also do well to consult closely with the korean community in the united states on what they can do together to improve relations with the host country and avert another outbreak of racial conflict like the l.a. riots back in 1992.

i'm utterly disgusted by some of the things i've been seeing on the south korean papers.

regardless of when this was drawn—before or after it became known that the shooter was a south korean—the artist should be fired for this.

at least i'll have some comfort in knowing that i wasn't the only person who found this art extremely distasteful.

really, koreans have no business offering apologies for what happened—stop being ridiculous. the only person who should be doing the apologizing is the coward who shot himself, before ending the lives of thirty-two innocent people. we, just like anybody else in any ethnic group, can only offer our sympathies for those who were affected by this terrible tragedy.

here's yet another post lifted from the marmot's hole:

i fail to see how public acts of guilt-by-ethnic-association contrition help:

state sen. paull shin, d-edmonds, apologized to fellow lawmakers and legislative staff members, first at a private prayer meeting, then in senate chambers.

"it hurts me deeply, knowing what happened to korea and how much the u.s. helped," said shin, an orphan who was adopted by an american soldier after the korean war. "this is not the way to pay back the blessings we received."

although legislators told him he had no need to apologize, shin, fighting his emotions, said he felt compelled to do so because of his acceptance in america and his leadership position in the korean american community.

i'm sorry, but wtf, sen. shin? as if the shooter’s ethnicity weren’t irrelevant enough, now we’re bringing the korean war and u.s. aid to south korea into it? and you’re apologizing—i take it on behalf of the korean community—for a screwed-up kid murdering his schoolmates just because he happened to share the same ethnicity as you? does this mean i'm going to have to apologize each and every time a german or an irish-american does something terrible?

from chosun ilbo:

korean communities in the u.s. were horrified when it emerged that the gunman who killed 33 others at virginia tech was korean student cho seung-hui. recalling the nightmare of the 1992 los angeles riots, koreans in the u.s. worried about retaliation from other ethnic groups. some are considering leaving the u.s. there were also fears that the incident could negatively affect u.s. deliberations on including korea in its visa waiver program.

"i was horrified to hear that the shooter was a korean man," a korean sophomore at virginia tech said. "until yesterday, they said it was an asian. korean students have started to feel threatened." another korean student at the blacksburg university said the campus fell into silence after the tragedy. korean students stayed in their dorm rooms and are afraid to go out, checking up on each other’s safety by phone, he said. korean students worried about their future school life and retaliatory action by other students. the college has told students in an e-mail that all classes for this week are canceled. some korean students at virginia tech plan to stay in their dorms for the time being and leave for the homes of relatives in other parts of the u.s. by the weekend.

yook jong-ho, the chief of a vocational training center for koreans in fairfax, virginia said this was an incident "that shouldn’t have happened." he worried that the campus shooting could hurt the image of korea in the u.s. in the same way the sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks hurt relations between the u.s. and the middle east. koreans in virginia swiftly moved to guard against possible fallout from the massacre. in a meeting of some dozen members of the korean-american association of northern virginia tuesday, its chairman baek in-seok said the entire korean community was "shocked" to learn that the shooter was a korean student. he expressed hope that the actions of an individual will not translate into ethnic conflict. one korean woman there worried about the future life of her children in the u.s.

koreans in other parts of the u.s. were also shocked. kwak dong-hoon, of saint paul in minnesota, said he asked his children to keep safe out of concern of possible ethnic conflict. kim joon-yeop of bloomington, indiana, said the incident will have serious repercussions for koreans in america. some korean students worry if they can continue studying in the u.s. lee hyun-seok, a student in the doctorate program at the state university of new york, said he missed classes since he feared retaliatory attacks. a korean high school student in seattle also said he was so anxious that he skipped school, adding he may not be able to go to a u.s. college next year due to aftershocks of the atrocity.

korean ambassador to the u.s. lee tae-shik said he was shocked to learn that a korean committed "such a dreadful act." he pledged to do his utmost to come up with an effective response. the korean embassy formed a taskforce and sent a consul to virginia to discover the damage to korean students.

041707
i'm probably being irrational, but i feel so embarrassed right now, and i'm afraid to face people—i can't help thinking that people are going to try to associate this guy with me, just because we happen to share the same ethnic background.

and it doesn't exactly help when the u.s. media can't seem to stop pointing out, at every opportunity they get, that the guy was a south korean.

041707
from the marmot's hole:

nocut news is reporting that korean students in the united states are in shock after learning that the perpetrator of the worst school shooting in u.s. history was a korean. naturally enough, they are also worried about the repercussions this might have on them. at virginia tech alone, there are 160 korean grad students and some 300 undergrads.

korean authorities, meanwhile, are worried that the incident might cause diplomatic problems with the united states, and are concerned for the security of koreans in the united states. in particular, nocut news reports, korean diplomatic authorities are worried that the incident will not only throw cold water on recently improving relations with washington since the signing of the k.o.r.u.s. f.t.a., but also damage the international image of koreans.

from the metropolitician:

and for what it’s worth, perhaps now the south korean media and people will be faced with the question of stereotyping, media, and how treating individual incidents as evidence of various "national characters" leads down roads we don’t want to travel.

041707
christ, this asshole was a south korean guy? as if we didn't have a bad enough reputation as it is.

i wonder how the conservative/nationalistic south korean media will play off this one?

video of fear's infamous october 31, 1981 performance on saturday night live:

more info from wikipedia:

their most famous performance was on the 1981 halloween episode of saturday night live. the band was booked at the insistence of john belushi who was a huge fan. among the politically incorrect nature of fear's songs, the band's appearance included a coterie of dancers, causing destruction of the set. the band first performed "i don't care about you," during which, lee sang the words "fuck you" (albeit away from the microphone) on live television. the band started their second performance by saying it's great to be in new jersey, to which the audience booed (the show was filmed in new york). fear then played "beef bologna," "new york's alright... if you like saxophones," and started to play "let's have a war" when the audio and video of the telecast faded into commercial.

human beings are chimpanzees who get crazy drunk on power. by saying that our leaders are power-drunk chimpanzees, am i in danger of wrecking the morale of our soldiers fighting and dying in the middle east? their morale, like so many bodies, is already shot to pieces. they are being treated, as i never was, like toys a rich kid got for christmas.

it's like being sick all the time
coming home from work
sick in that low-grade continuous way
that makes you forget
what it's like to be well
we have never in our lives known
what it is to be well

what if i were coming home
from doing work that i loved
and that was for us all?
what if i looked at the houses
and the air and the streets
knowing they were in accord
not set against us?

what if we knew
the powers of this country
moved to provide for us
and for all people?
how would that be?
how would we feel and think?
and what would we create?
